This year our class is taking on the challenge of trying to solve some of the issues that have plagued our globe over the past twenty years. This page is designed to record our journey along the way as well as serve as a dumping ground for any information that we may come across as we begin and continue to research a possible solution.

Global Issue #1:

Education

The following document will serve as a template for you to follow as you go along and begin organizing you information.

Solving the Issues of the World…One Friday at a Time

Group Names:_ Izzy And Foster

Global Issue #1: Education

Background of Issue: (who?, what?, where?, when?, why?)

Who?- education across the United States and compared to worldwide
elementary,middle, and high school education
mainly focusing on high school education issues
the government effect on education

What?- how it compares in the united states to the worldwide and how we can fix this major issue
the problems with education
the negative results of some of these issues
who these problems are majorly effecting

why students don't focus as well during school

where?- US and worldwide
compared to major education countries
throughout the United States

When? from past 10-20 yrs til now
improvement and defaults of education
how the government of the time effects education

Why?- to help improve and develop education throughout the United States
Learn from past experiences to help improve education
help the future generations
learn to be responsible with the money for education

Costs: human and/or financial cost?

the financial cost in 2008 for education was 972 billion dollars for all levels of school
public school is free so it doesn't cost any money (tax-funded)
private school costs money ranging from anywhere
US government spends $9,644 dollars on a student compared to 22,600 on a prison member

In 2008 the us economic gap between children in the US and children compared to other countries deprived the US of 2.3 trillion dollars.
The United States spent $553 billion on public elementary and secondary Education in 2006-2007

Previous Efforts Put Into Place to Help Resolve Issue:
The American system of public education was created with very impportant purposes,to prepare youth for a successful career and provide knowledge for children.

A problem that has been solved in education is money. Schools have used budgeting in their systems by giving each subject a certain budget for supplies and other materials so that one class will not get more attention or power than another.

Another solved problem that manny schools are doing today is having a sister school in a poor country or area with little or no education. For example woodward has a sister school in Taranova, we have helped people there get a better education and way of life.

No Child Left Behind Act put into place by President Bush on Jan.8, 2002
  • by 2005-06states were being required to have tests annually of mathematics and reading/english
  • by 2007-08 had to test in science too
  • states had to send annual report cards showing a range of information
  • teachers had to become "high qualified" in the subject they taught
  • The act created a new competitive-grant program called Reading First, funded at $1.02 billion in 2004, to help states and districts set up "scientific, research-based" reading programs for children in grades K-3
  • law intended to give states greater flexibility on how they spent their federal allotments
  • focused on making sure students passed tests

Most private schools require uniforms to help students focus more on their work than their outfits. Unlike public schools which have no uniforms and everyone tries to compare themselves to each other instead of focusing on their education. Because

Reasons why previous efforts to help resolve issue have failed:

many efforts involved money which is not always the answer.
giving money to the federal government and asking them to do something will not solve all issues.

No Child left Behind Act
the teachers taught for the students to pass the test. they don't focus on different styles of learning or consider how students enjoy learning.
just because a student doesnt do well on a test doesnt mean they are bad at the subject. some may not be good test takers so standardized testing may not be the key answer for education.

rely on one-size fits all type of education

Areas of concern on reaching your desired solution to the global issue:

TECHNOLOGY. try to take it away while children are focusing.fine line on when it helps or hurts the school
kids need less of an distraction while learning

Statistics of technology:
  • In the past few years technology use for teachers and schoolwork has increased by 77%
  • 97 percent of teachers had one or more computers located in the classroom every day.
  • 54 percent could bring computers into the classroom.
  • Internet access was available for 93 percent of the computers located in the classroom every day.
  • 96 percent of the computers that could be brought into the classroom.
  • The ratio of students to computers in the classroom every day was 5.3 to 1.

These numbers have increased greatly in the past few years and continue to rise every day.

YOUR PLAN OF ACTION! (for this section, you will need to provide the most detail as you lay a step-by-step plan on how your group will go about tackling this issue. It is important that you take a look at all the information you have researched and studied and use that information to develop a true, realistic and effective plan of action. The plan needs to include funding, people involved, time length of project, materials needed, etc…)

SOLUTION

Start:
Education major Issue
How to make students focus more on school/education than outside areas.
why students dont focus in school

We are focusing on middle and high school and the lack of education being learned because of the distractions to the students. the effect of technology upon students in middle and high scholl. We are hoping to make the drop out rate lower.
previous efforts that have been made:

  • focused on making sure students passed test

One plan that was tried but didn't work that well.
The reason why this did not work because it was strict and did not focus on different ways of learning. Used the idea of one size- fits all kind of education. Teachers then focused on just teaching to pass tests instead of teaching to learn the actual material.
